The estimates of numbers of devices to be fielded is all over the map. Jen Hudson cites a little # & $$$ allotted for ENVG-B, as usual, we unlike the Army cannot see in the dark or through obscurants. Visiting Fort Bragg this weekend maybe I can find out something useful about the drop test etc

with all Kopin's talk about he efficacy of Monocular Devices the military aspires to something more, what's the word? Stereoscopic. As the guy said "There is no one-eyed predator at the top of the food-chain.

"The Army is requesting to reprogram $104.6 million to procure 3,609 Enhanced Night Vision Goggle - Binocular (ENVG-B) systems to support an operational needs statement from Army Forces Command. New night vision goggles is one the earliest efforts within the Soldier Lethality CFT.
To pay for those new systems, the Army is cutting the funding — in the same amount — from the acquisition of a monocular night vision system, the request notes."

The Army is one step closer to fielding a next-generation weapon sight

The first batch of a total of 64,000-night vision devices, the ENVG-III are arriving at infantry and special operations forces units this year. The 36,000 FWS-I devices are expected to hit units sometime in late 2018 or early 2019.

eMagin Investor Exchange with eMagin CEO Andrew Sculley at Recent Investor Conference Referencing Comments Made by Intel's Chief Engineer at Recent SID Display Week...

I mentioned to Andrew that apparently Kunjal had used the "partner" reference during the SID presentation. His reply, "I wasn't there so I can't tell you what he said but I will say this. They missed mobile computing. They are not going to miss this."

Pretty Good...

They told us who their manu part was at Session 40 but that tree falling in the forest... Session 40 is what passes for a "dramatic" announcement. Roy Taylor and AMD similarly...I get it, feels like they could on on for years with selective drip, drip. drip

In order to appreciate full effect of what it is like to be an eMagin investor lean backward over sink with forehead beneath faucet aerator and stay there indefinitely

My hope is the Defense Industry Keeps AR & VR Viable Until the Silicon Valley Children Sort Themselves Out...

the state of the art high volume facility may not be completed within the time frame we expect; there may be issues with obtaining permits, materials and other issues which may prevent the building of the facility; we may not be able to obtain the 20 acres parcel of land in Kunming Yunnan Province China and therefore have to find an alternative site which may cause delays in building the facility

Terrific Lurker, Mike Pence in Cedar Rapids Visits Rockwell-Collins and Is Informed "Don't worry Mike we're scraping that LCD junk out of the Helmet..."

Before speaking to the employee PAC, Pence had toured Rockwell’s Concept Flight Deck where he piloted a flight simulator, which according to Blum, Pence successfully got off the ground. He also saw a variety of products the company is developing, including the F-35 helmet-mounted display system that is being upgraded with a color organic light-emitting diode to replace a monochrome display.

Peak Nano Optics Closes Minority Investment with L3 Technologies (FEB)

https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20180228006390/en/Peak-Nano-Optics-Closes-Minority-Investment-L3

forgot to mention, few will slog thru the interview but at one point he describes the nature of their relationship with Peak Nano whereby they buy the rights to GRIN on the military side and Peak Nano can do what they want with the rest of their time

L3 Technologies’ Kubasik on Corporate Transformation, Defense Spending, ...

Provocative...Thanks Jim

"The retrofit of our latest 2K × 2K microdisplay prototypes into the original design of this IHMD is being considered as a means to showcase their superior performance and higher resolution."

So the new 2K x2K was supposed to be qualified and introduced in 2Q which has come and gone . I'm hoping they are working on a prototype/reference design with the new high brightness 2k x 2k and Peak Nano GRIN optics to help introduce the new 2k x2k .

This gives an egress into a cockamamie theory. What if the "other" company is one who might be interested in having an exclusive on the defense side? Insight Technology was the first as I recall to buy eMagin displays to get a thermal channel into their Night Vision, Night Scopes etc. Insight subsequently bought by L-3. The Grin Optics explains the rapidity and reduced SWAP which L-3 built the ENVG-B in a few months and became State of the Art. And Dr. Wittels eMagin Chairman of the Board:

From 2001 until July, 2011, Dr. Wittels was Corporate Vice President, Business and Technology Strategy of L-3 Communications. Her responsibilities at L-3 included developing strategies for growth, oversight of R&D, diligence support for M&A, and cross-company business development coordination.

I'll post an interview that Vago did for Defense News with the New L-3 CEO Kubasik. He gives brief recognition to ENVG-B but  also talks about Training and Simulation for Pilot Training and other roles for MR/VR. L-3 looks to be the the Sixth "Prime" and the strategy to get their is performing well in these small but growing niches. Leave the Big Platforms for Lockheed, Boeing, DRS to fight over and get enough of the little stuff to get into the company of the Primes. Maybe crazy but if eMagin wants to do the R&D L-3 would seem a likely suitor to manufacturer the displays. In Londonderry NH right?

This is fun, DZ's new BFF on Twitter...

Another Thought About Opt...

Thinking about "The Thinker"

There was a time when (no shocker) eMagin's future was very much in doubt. The Technology was too sophisticated, too expensive. OLED suffered from short lifetime, burn-in, embarrassingly low yields, low demand. Thinking about this reminds me just how dicey things were. In the midst there was Opt. And there was Sagem/Felin. Opt did, I did not realize the importance of FELIN, Soldier Modernization in France.  I thought the Suite was a good fit for eMagin displays and took for granted eMagin would eventually dominate the the market. So I peddled some flummery here. I assumed Land Warrior in the States was a slam dunk after the Strykers seemed to embrace it in their Brigade exercises at Lewis-McChord. I did not know that behind the scenes Ralph Osterhout was working the Pentagon to cancel the program. The Generals listened to Ralph. So it was the American Made OLED displays that eventually ended up in the Rifle Scopes and HUDs of the French Foreign Legion that turned out to be THE critical program that gave eMagin just enough cash and credibility to survive. Without it this company would be a footnote at Display Daily
And Opt watched that program more closely than than the French Ministry of Defense. He dug and questioned until he was satisfied that the program would survive. He would get jittery if he saw some vulnerability in the Sagem/eMagin partnership. He held fast. He was nails. He provided us the highest resolution, FOV and visual acuity. Ha! Thinking of it now he is the one who provided us the greatest Situational Awareness.

The Wheels are turning in the Mid-Hudson...eMagin is a member in good standing of the Council of Industry (Thanks Chouffe, stirring comeback by your Belgian side, Dummy play, wow)

I note with sadness that our friend known on the Message Boards as Optimist1 has died.

What a  fine man. He researched a little company on little message boards with great insight, diligence and humor. A realist, he never let himself be fogged by big expectations or flummery. He saw clearly the challenges and opportunities the company contended with and brought much insight to our motley crew. He was not afraid to travel into the belly of the beast and would make  a yearly trip to NYC  to attend the Shareholders Meeting. He always returned with voluminous notes. I would tease him about how the work on the Novel was going as we were eager to read his observations. I pictured Dickens or Tolstoy finishing his Magnum Opus by candlelight. We knew him in this very small niche of his life. I can't imagine what an impact he had in the 99% of his life. Like eMagin CEO Sculley told another eMagin Investor recently as he contemplated his future as to retirement etc. "I want to be here for the success." We wish Opt was here for it as well.
