we still got the headaches

I know of a goofy little company that can help with this...

AWE is stretching out, usually Tom Emrich with Cat Ears... WARMONGERS!

well, we have the " jumping spider retinal tracking stimuli" niche to ourselves, everyone's favorite arachnid esp Rony Abovitz... Ta Dah! Phidippus audax!

On the other hand progress has been made on other "AR " programs for the dismounted soldier AITT, Coalescence, ENVG/RTA, FWS, JTAC, so fog of war, who the hell knows what their cooking up?

I guess there is a case to be made that ARL does not know what they are doing after Land Warrior, after NOMAD, after NETT Warrior after DSTS...

a series of fits and starts. They keep trying. Each in their way have been seen as failures, each in their way have contributed to a slow march towards a program that accomplishes the mission. Guttag has an axe to grind with anyone who has a different POV. Listen to his podcast, yikes. He cobbled together his own Magic Leap 1 and then said Magic Leap sucks. Think that was a good faith effort? Like it or not Magic Leap's rep is improving out there in developer land. And in the case of ARL anyone who does not take what a secretive organization makes available to the public with a block of salt is naive or worse.

Oculus chief scientist Mike Abrash still sees the rosy future through AR/VR (waveguide) glasses...Hey Frog-Leg...Guttag is an expert, granted. Why is he working with a small shop with no money attempting to duplicate what others have spent and are spending millions of dollars to develop and field?

Synaptics cozying up to GF

Because..

This is a lot better than...

This

Elbit has solved these problems with Ironvision, of course tankers fight in a static environment. Giving one to a grunt in the field does sound like a daunting challenge. Even if the current generation of soldiers is digitally adept.

Ender's Game is out there somewhere, I guess.

Brilliant...A wealth of Information on the failure of DSTS and the drive to find an HMD (HUD 3.0) that can used in training and in the field. Pros and Cons. This apparently has been much more of an issue than we've realized. DSTS, the author say, has been collecting dust on shelves. The military has been disillusioned with VR as a training tool and wants badly to move on.

New info: the attraction to ML is based on it's ability to "cheek weld". (Allows the dominant eye to look through the device without vergance accommodation conflict a problem VR is unable to solve.)
And some Cons, ML failed a cybersecurity test and how does the Pentagon get around this? Alibaba's early funding of the company with all the complications attacked to Chinese tentacles. Great stuff in here.

From March 2018. Missed a lot of this....

who is the critical contractor?

https://breakingdefense.com/2018/03/hud-3-0-army-to-test-augmented-reality-for-infantry-in-18-months/

Maybe too much is being made of a rivalry. Two sources right?

Monday, September 24, 2018

That is really interesting.Everyone shocked that Microsoft and ML are in on the bidding to develop an HMD that could be used service-wide in any environment...

light-dark, cold-hot, wet-dry that performed with any mission demand that could eventuate. It's plausible to think that if small Army Research Lab, smaller Chosen Decisions say linked up with giants you could interpose their proven ability to develop the concept and the proof with the facility and deep pockets of these titans. Perfect cross-fertilization in way. We've always known that the military would do this right and first, necessity being the Mother of Invention (not Zappa). Now the military is talking COTS and private sector and nimbleness. It makes PERFECT sense this would be the way they go. Nett Warrior was shitcanned years ago and now I believe we are seeing what is coming in Augmented Reality, TAR in the military and something similar for civilian use. Maybe Hololens 3 and ML2/3. Fascinating. Thank you Jim for making that connection. Food for thought.

I like that theory Jim. That explains the Citizenship strictures and the Fed Ops Advert.

Seemed a little odd that it was posted under the category of Federal Gov Jobs. I thought perhaps the $$$ that was awarded by the Gov last Q for yield improvement and equipment upgrades.

this appears to be more ambitious than that quarter million allocated and again the "clients" mentioned twice in Job Description. I dunno garce. Sounds like the Manager will be reporting to multiple "clients" i.e. those paying for a service which requires an expansion and volume upgrade. As aways an eNigma.

Too me this job looks like one written for VP Saltarelli

"Hi, my name is Joe."

Any of you grammarians out there wanna take a crack at diagramming this sentence? "According", IMO is a noun phrase that reports the intention and desire of a 3rd party, apart from but attendant too the requirements of the position. I may be wrong but that's my understanding. Can "client" refer to eMagin as the employer? "Client" generally refers to someone seeking a service. Anybody have another interpretation?

The project manager will apply project management methodologies including, but not limited to, schedule development and management, resource management (internal and external), risk management, stakeholder management, financial and procurement management, contractual compliance, and communication management as required in order to deliver projects within scope, on-time, on-budget, and according to client requirements.

Opt's report from ASM 2017. Opt elicited the Response...

The first slide was plastered with a mass of names of the many companies with which eMagin did business.  I started by asking Andrew what he meant when he used the phrase “Tier 1 company”?  Did he mean a major conglomerate such as Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, Facebook or Amazon or could it mean just a leader in a specific area such as AMD, Intel, or Nvidia in electronics or Occulus, HTC, or ODG in headsets?  His answer was, “All of them”.

Client?

The project manager will apply project management methodologies including, but not limited to, schedule development and management, resource management (internal and external), risk management, stakeholder management, financial and procurement management, contractual compliance, and communication management as required in order to deliver projects within scope, on-time, on-budget, and according to client requirements.

The reason Magic Leap is getting a long look at developing AR for the military is the Intelligent Decisions connection, Microsoft connection, Orlando connection and Army Research Lab connection.

Chosen Realities CEO, Scott Johnson, was the designer at Intelligent Decisions who refined the VR Squad Training System (DSTS) that Quantum3D handed off to them. He developed the First-Person Shooter Trainer for Hololens, Orlando is Training and Simulation Ground Zero for the military and ARL is already displaying a prototype of the system at AUSA this year. And then again it may be a dodge. something to confuse the adversaries and maybe not. I would've thought Rockwell would be in this but...? who knows?

PS: Intelligent Decisions used a ruggedized eMagin HMD in their program.

What Investors Really See In Virtual Reality (Intel Investment Capital People Chewing the Fat)

https://www.vrfocus.com/2018/09/what-investors-really-see-in-virtual-reality/

I dunno chouffe, what if the "brilliant Doc Fan" or "The Genius" Paul Travers were featured at such an event speaking on these "Big Picture" topics? You know what? What if eMagin was able to push themselves out there without the vulgarity of those two? There has to be a happy medium between hiring Social Networking Firms, bots, "for hire" story placements, the constant baying of those dogs and eMagin's, NDAs, self effacement and silence.

Future displays for Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality Head Sets are of necessity very advanced. The feeling of Reality requires no motion artifacts, high contrast, high field of view (FOV), a resolution close to the human eye and good color. These requirements require special capability in our displays. The consumer market requires reasonable display costs. This talk will cover what is needed in the display for the market to be successful.

We know. Whats needed is a mass volume manufacturing partner.

Pivot...

looking for a Thermoteknix bump...kidding but eMagin displays

This is what they were talking about on the Yahoo Board in response to Vuzix waveguide thing. Elbit Skylens (eMagin displays) has been in development for years and is placed with premium partners

ATR, Dassault, Leonardo, Gulfstream. Every stock photo in these Vuzix stories has the glasses used for inspection and repair. The Elbit Skylens is targeted at new cockpits, civil, commercial, military and they are doing it NOW. Additionally the Universal acquisition allows for access to the after-market.

Don't know if these goofball PRs from Kopin and Vuzix are preferable to fumbling around in the dark...

BTW where the millions of $$$ Vuzix said they were going to make off wounded warriors? $175 Million wow, that's a lot money. Ever think to donate any of these devices with all that profit? Mox Report?

Vuzix deal with Wounded Warriors 'a significant opportunity,' says Maxim Maxim analyst Brian Kinstlinger estimates that Vuzix's deal with Wounded Warriors could generate $175M of revenue for Vuzix over a four to five year period. He reiterates an $11 price target and a Buy rating on the shares.

Trying to stop the bleeding...

the Kopin displays will find their way into the F-35C, planes that take off and land conventionally for a time. The Short Take-offs and Carriers will be first with the OLED displays where it's most critical. It's not a matter of snapping your fingers. The FWS-I is a product of the DOD's dual supplier philosophy. Just in case. Wire bond. Remember? But that's a small bite if the entire ENVG, FWS-I, FWS-C and FWS-S suite.

Another factor is that influencers like Yole and Display Daily see the "Next Display" as Microled. Yole Mentioned DPD in their Recent Market Overview but devoted a lot more space to LED. Chris Chinook's Display Daily Prefers Pretty Much Anything Over OLED. Always has...

so Sculley says "Years Away on LED". Display Daily says "only" 20%" to go.

The Demos at Microsoft Stores are Boring and Thrown Together. Indicates a Lack of Interest on the Consumer Side. Content is awful or consumer not interested, Chicken/Egg/Both. The Global AR/VR Summit Has a Commercial Bent so eMagin's Seeming "Not as exciting as last year" reflects reality...

"One of the major issues with the VR market is that consumers still find it difficult to try a VR headset," said Jitesh Ubrani senior research analyst for IDC Mobile Device Trackers. "This is where the commercial market has an opportunity to shine. HTC's recent partnership with Dave & Busters or Oculus' work with schools around the world stand to play an important role in educating and enticing consumers to use VR."
"In a market where mainstream VR content is still lacking, a growing number of vendors are looking to commercial as a way to build their business while they wait for the consumers to catch up," said Tom Mainelli, program vice president, Devices and Augmented and Virtual Reality at IDC. "These vendors are moving beyond entertainment-focused B2C deployments to real-world training scenarios in companies of all sizes, all over the world. IDC expects commercial buyers to represent an increasingly important percentage of the market going forward.”

Unlike Vuzix at least we don't have ambulance chasing lawyers pursuing eMagin down the street. Nobody would think to accuse eMagin's Officers of attempting to influence the share price up, would they?...

on the other hand it's deflating having Kevin Dede assign Microvision a similar price target, yikes. Microvision. And Mr. Zeiler. I notice that reliable followers are no longer touching your 💗 on Twitter. Even Kopin seems not to notice. Have you ever thought to pay to promote your Tweets? Thousands would see them then. Hey Chouffe. What if we turned the crank a few more clicks on your observation...

JS has streamlined the operations, he thought of "spare parts", the factory is getting audit raves from the Feds, yields and margins are expanding, learning the supply chain, materials etc. He has seemingly mastered OLED microdisplay manufacturing. Perhaps his time at eMagin has been a finishing school getting him ready for a bigger stage. Maybe like one of the ones you mentioned.

sure, one naturally follows the other...and he gets an Amen...Kopinistan

Deep Thought of the Day...

This is a military company. The stock holders are subsiding this company for the military. The military is not going to allow the best displays in the world, the ones that are going into the F-35 helmet, to go into a 15 year old kids Call of Duty HMD. If the tech is there, it will not be released to the general public for

What is this? A screen for ants? Spoiler Alert! eMagin makes the display they are referencing.

It's possible to write a long, literate, informative story on the use of Microdisplays by Dismounted Soldiers and not once feel it necessary to ask David Fellowes or any of the geeks they can find at CERDEC "what the heck is this "Screen for Ants" thing all about". What is it?, who makes it? At this point I should not be surprised. Folks on-line, who purport to have followed the company for years are not interested. Always have to reach past a military purpose to an application they can wrap their heads around. Consumer product, civilian use and cheap is where they live. I wonder. Why are they still here?

Coping with bright sunlight was a major hurdle. Most commercial screen solutions can’t deliver the necessary brightness with the full color and high definition needed to support soldier applications, and commercial cell phone makers are generally focused on making screens bigger, rather than smaller. Thus, a substantial internal development effort was required to overcome the glare issue, Klager said.
Engineers also have pushed for a screen that could deliver data not just legibly, but accurately. “Say we take friendly-force information, which is a two-dimensional grid coordinate. We have to accurately display that in three dimensions, in the real world. That icon has to be accurate,” Klager said. “That is the big challenge in augmented reality, the geolocation of the augmented information. You can’t just display it.”
The team has leaned on digital terrain data, horizon matching and other advanced techniques to ensure the display data correlates correctly to information in the real world.
Finally, developers have worked to ensure that a micro-sized display will still be user friendly. When you’re trying to squeeze vital combat intel onto a very small screen, “it’s about displaying the right amount of information and displaying it effectively,” Klager said. “You have to make the displays user-configurable depending on the user function or preference. Say I was a driver: I’d want to have navigation information available, and perhaps close threats, but I don’t need to see long-range targets. If I were a gunner I’d want to see threats and friendly forces at all ranges,."

Anyone paying for this needs a check-up from the neck up, you really know your stuff Ken. I took the liberty of indicating who supplies these Defense Giants (in parentheses)

Key Players
Aselsan (eMagin OEM) S.A. (Turkey), BAE Systems (eMagin OEM) plc (U.K), Elbit Systems Ltd. (eMagin OEM) (Israel), Kopin Corporation (LOL) (U.S.), Rockwell Collins, Inc. (eMagin OEM) (U.S.), and Thales Group (eMagin OEM) (France) are some of the key players profiled in this report. The aerospace helmet mounted display market is dominated by top four players, namely BAE Systems, Elbit Systems Ltd., Rockwell Collins, and Thales Group, accounting for more than 90% of the global market size.

Lots of Military Business Out There (presentation by eMagin Officers at Rodman & Renshaw)
