so I am trying to think of a company that is "very powerful" in AR and VR, working on a 4kx4k VR HMD, might employ a optical designer that formerly worked at eMagin who at one point indicated, while reporting to eMagin CEO, was on assignment elsewhere, designed the Steampu......

Wrote this two years ago...

Attended as an observer eMagin's Analyst Day in NYC a few years back. One of the slides mentioned Google Glass as did the accompanying Prospectus that was provided. Google Glass mentioned prominently in the Presentation by AS.

Following Fall attended the Association of the US Army. Spoke generally to an eMagin employee about Google Glass. I should say that beforehand I told him I was a shareholder. He recited the "in person" version of the Safe Harbor Statement. I asked him his opinion of Google Glass. He made glasses from his hands,  you know, how kids do, held them up to his eyes and said "Google is not happy with the resolution." The discussion ended with that.

Jerry Carollo, for some time listed his employment history at his Linkedin Profile as concurrently working for eMagin and Google. As of a few days ago, it changed, now he lists Google as his sole employer, occupation, Optical Architect. Jerry Carollo since his early Pre-Intevac days has only designed HMDs using eMagin OLED displays.

Google is the only "Household Named" company that is prominently involved in designing both Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality HMDs. A partnership with eMagin would solve the optical needs of both devices in development.
Was not sure how serious Google was about Virtual Reality until this week when reports emerged that Google was planning a "Family of headworn devices" and additionally the public statement that Google's VR HMD would "not always be cardboard." Finally AS mentioned, in the recent Conference Call, Google's investment in Himax as an exemplar of what a partnership would look like for eMagin.

Circumstantial, I know, but sometimes that is enough to convict.

American Made eMagin AMOLED Inside..Army continues to own the night: ‘Enhanced’ night vision ready for troops

Ms. Barrie
said the ENVG III/FWS-I technology provides troops with the following benefits:
  • Soldiers will no longer need to switch between night vision goggles and weapon-mounted thermal sights to engage an enemy.
  • Wireless technology allows a soldier to “see” what the rifle “sees,” which negates the need to look through a weapons sight.
  • Ultra-sharp images remove the need to ‘paint’ targets with lasers.
  • The new technology does a better job of seeing “through” obstacles “like dense foliage.”
  • ENVG III/FWS-I weigh less than previous iterations of the technology.
A monocular used by troops even allows them to “shoot from around a building corner” or “above their heads with accuracy while safely tucked behind a giant concrete barrier,” Fox News reported.

“That’s an incredible advantage,” Ms. Barrie said. “That sort of precision, the ability to be able to see so precisely with such clarity, will really enable our soldiers to distinguish between someone who’s a threat and not a threat. … It doesn’t really get much better than that.”

ARtillry Briefs, Episode 16

The Lonely Bull

another thing, DZ, lone Kopin Bull. I lost count how many times Sculley said AMERICAN OLED. The time is near when you will get ZERO US/NATO Business Capeche?

chouffe, some seriously oblique stuff in there, that was a good one. I didn't pick up anything about "private" sales but I'll have another listen

and comrade zieler, military expert, it says "slated" for August. (see very detailed Safe Harbor Statement in Kopin's report) and I will tick off the dismounted and aviation programs eMagin is in if you like. And maybe it should worry you that Sculley included forward motion on "mounted soldiers" as well. Maybe your little Abrams /Stryker/Bradley Driving Instructor HMD is in play.

All the Thumbs I Can Martial Go UP!

Let me say this about the manufacturing partnership. NOTHING is more important than getting this done right. Clearly mgmt was not happy with the terms being offered and think they can do better for shareholders. Let's see how this plays out.

eMagin Corporation Announces First Quarter 2018 Financial Results

- Posts 13% Revenue Growth in Q1; 20% Increase in Backlog from Year End -
HOPEWELL JUNCTION, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 10, 2018-- eMagin Corporationor the “Company”, (NYSE American: EMAN), a leader in the development, design and manufacture of Active Matrix OLED microdisplays for high resolution imaging products, today announced financial results and corporate highlights for the first quarter ended March 31, 2018.
“We had a strong start to the year for our commercial initiatives as well as our military programs,” said Andrew Sculley, President and Chief Executive Officer. “In addition, we are making important strides in our manufacturing processes that have contributed to improvement in yields and increased throughput.”
“We are seeing broader, accelerating interest within the consumer AR/VR market. New opportunities continue to surface for our high brightness, direct patterned OLED microdisplays. Consistently, we hear from prospects in the consumer segment that our cutting-edge technology is a key enabler for next generation HMD products,” continued Mr. Sculley. “I am happy to say that the design of our next generation display is on track and going well. We look forward to having prototypes available for customers by year end 2018 or early 2019.
“As we work with our prospective manufacturing partners and our consumer electronics OEMs, our focus remains on identifying the optimal business structure to scale our direct patterning (dPdtm) technology and best capitalize on the consumer AR/VR market opportunity. This will enable us to achieve the broadest application of our dPd technology in the marketplace.
“Our military business continues to grow, and we saw increased bookings from our U.S. programs as well as from foreign military customers. At March 31st, our product backlog was $11.8 million, an increase of over 20% from the $9.8 millionbacklog at December 31, 2017. We are supporting many programs that the US military considers to be of high importance including applications for night vision, thermal weapon sights, see-through HMD systems for mounted and dismounted missions as well as aviation helmet upgrades and prototypes for next generation helmet systems.
“We are continuing to make progress in our development of very high brightness full-color microdisplays incorporating our dPd technology. To this end, we are designing further improvements to lengthen the lifetime of our microdisplays and incorporating enhancements to our equipment to improve our production yields and expand our manufacturing capacity.
“The response to our micro displays has been overwhelmingly positive. Demand for our products remains strong both domestically and internationally. This is leading to more orders and requests for accelerated deliveries across the board,” concluded Mr. Sculley.
Business and Product Highlights
  • We are continuing to optimize our dPd technology and having previously demonstrated maximum brightness of more than 5,300 nits, we have recently achieved greater than 7000 nits while reducing power consumption by 20%.
  • We are advancing discussions with multiple consumer electronics partner prospects regarding eMagin’s next generation microdisplays for AR/VR applications. Additionally, we received an inquiry from two additional prospective Tier 1 customers about designing and developing displays.
  • We expanded discussions on mass production for the commercial market and included an additional potential partner in those discussions.
  • We accelerated shipments for multiple international customers as business activity increases.
  • We are expanding our business development initiatives internationally and pursuing new markets in Asia where we have not been as active. In April we participated in the DefExpo 18 India trade show where our microdisplays received strong interest from defense and commercial customers in the rapidly growing Indian market.
  • We are on schedule with the OLED upgrade to a production helmet for a multi-service, multi-country, fixed wing aircraft program. Additional displays for pre-production testing will be delivered in the second quarter with deliveries of displays for flight testing expected in the fourth quarter. We are receiving positive feedback on the performance of this OLED helmet during qualification and flight testing.
Quarter Results
Revenues for the first quarter of 2018 grew 13% to $6.9 million, an increase of $0.8 million from revenues of $6.1 millionreported a year ago and up sequentially by $0.5 million from the fourth quarter of 2017.
Product revenues increased 34% to $5.9 million compared to $4.4 million in the first quarter of 2017. The year-on-year increase in product revenue was due to an increase in display revenues from the ramp up of new U.S. military programs and increased demand by international customers. Contract revenues totaled $1.0 million in the first quarter compared to $1.7 million in the same quarter of last year. The current quarter’s revenues were from a number of customers whereas the prior year’s contract revenues were primarily from one consumer customer.
Overall gross margin for the first quarter was 29% on gross profit of $2.0 million compared to a gross margin of 30% on gross profit of $1.8 million in the prior year period. The decrease in gross margin was primarily due to higher unit material costs in the 2018 quarter and lower contract revenues in the quarter on which the Company generally earns a higher gross margin.
Operating expenses for the first quarter of 2018, including R&D expenses, were $4.5 million as compared to $3.8 millionin the first quarter of 2017. Operating expenses as a percentage of sales were 66% in the first quarter compared to 63% a year ago. The increase in operating expenses was due to higher R&D expenses associated with the development of the Company’s dPd and XLS process technologies, as well as greater spending on professional services, legal and travel expenses for negotiations with prospective consumer electronics customers and volume manufacturing partners. Also included in operating expenses were approximately $240 thousand for transaction fees incurred in the January 2018offering which were associated with the fair value of the warrant liability.
Operating loss for the first quarter was $2.6 million versus an operating loss of $2.0 million in the first quarter of last year. Net loss for the first quarter of 2018 was $2.1 million, or $0.05 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $2.0 million, or $0.06 per diluted share, in the first quarter of 2017.
As of March 31, 2018, the Company had cash and cash equivalents of $9.8 million, working capital of $16.5 million, and borrowing availability under the ABL facility of $4.4 million.

Mike is Hiring!

Kopin Inside?! Please Disseminate, Retweet, Heart, Kopin Social Media Cabal!

Derrick, where is Kopin's facility in Charleston WVA? Mantech has a presence in the Robert Byrd Center. Is that where it is?

John Fan
Sure, sure. We have facilities in Charleston, down in Western Virginia and Westborough, Massachusetts. And so in a typical semiconductor model, we have a high fixed cost. And so utilization in one of our plants is lower than we had anticipated. So the fixed cost per unit was higher which negatively impacted gross margins, but the other facilities did well. So for the most part offset, we're of about 0.8% on the gross margin.
Jeff Bernstein
And is that just a timing issue?
John Fan
Yes. We saw orders were going to come through in the first quarter, didn't materialize – I understand them showing up in the second quarter so.

Pretty sure this does not have Kopin Inside!, can you guys convince me I'm wrong?

These risks and uncertainties include, but are not limited to, the following either or both the F-35, FWS-I and FWS-C programs could be cancelled; we may not receive additional orders for our components for the F-35 and FWS-I programs; we may be designed out of the F-35 and FWS-I programs; we may not pass qualification of the FWS-C program; the FWS-I program may not begin to ship in August 2018; the armored vehicle program may be cancelled; the revenue from the armored vehicle program may not be in the range of $40 million to $80 million over its life to us;

The company is the Department of Defense's so-called Trusted Foundry as the exclusive maker of high-end chips for military equipment. GlobalFoundries' current contract with the Defense Department is valued as high as $755 million.

After describing issues with limited field-of-view (FOV) in existing Oculus headsets, Guajardo then showed another breakout of the Half Dome headset, revealing a pair of larger, wider lenses. Guajardo advertised these prototype lenses as offering a "140-degree" FOV, which greatly exceeds the existing 110-degree maximum in both Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. Guajardo didn't describe any other tweaks or changes to this lens design, including whether or not it would continue using the "Fresnel" design of the original Rift, nor did she clarify anything about Half Dome's screen panel (pixel resolution, OLED vs. LCD, etc.)

Just being paranoid, I guess..Snowden leaks documents that show China stole F-35 jet plans from US (and the radar system design, PS they will need the new displays or reasonable facsimile)

No problemo...

Don't worry Kopinites, nobody cares if you off-shore tech that at one time was critical to the F-35 (see picture below) program and now want to export even more sophisticated technology to PLA and their Surrogates...

Again and again we hear how the Army is preparing for Close Combat in Large Cities. HUD 1.0 (Bino ENVG), RTA in FWS, Ironman, TAR, pivoting to a Rapid Reaction Force or is this just lesson learned from the horrors of Fallujah where Marines were thrown to the wolves...

ah, too dramatic. Most likely preparing a smaller, more mobile, more versatile, better trained future force. Whatever it is it accrues to our benefit. Most Mod efforts have eMagin displays where near eye is needed.
