Intel wants to get VR onto as many heads as possible and the big market is the PGA, NBA, NFL, MLB, Premier League, Cricket, Xtreme Games. Combine that with Gamers and the is the largest addressable market possible. The fastest growing market is sports as content is in China. That's the way to do it. Intel can sell their semis and Valve can sell headsets and software. In the case of the former you don't have to talk all the stuff geeks want to talk about. That's useless (see any Reddit thread on the subject of VR). Find people with interest and money and they'll hit the motherlode.
