Google Glass-like Eyegear for Soldiers

Troops one day will receive vital, real-time cues about their location, surrounding terrain, danger zones and much more with “augmented reality” holographic glasses. Called ULTRA-Vis, the transparent eye screen covers one eye and provides visual pop-ups keyed to a wearer’s exact location, plus directional signs and alerts to enemy locations. Yes, it’s like Google Glass, but featuring a mini war room map with sensors and live data. Applied Research Associates in Arlington, Virginia, and Britain’s BAE Systems are developing the eyewear with DARPA. As the technology is refined, future applications could easily be found for police, firefighters and even commercial pilots.

If we take eMagin's assertions about the iHMD at face value (always a dicey proposition) they were to demo to the HMD in early January. That in mind I like to think Jerry oversaw the demos then with his Magnum Opus complete he retires to the beach in Carlsbad. Makes sense.  Starting at his CDS he migrates to Intevac and makes state of the art Digital HMDs, Night Port, iPort etc. then sets his sights on the consumer/industrial/commercial arena with the iHMD. We know eMagin was testing the headset this past summer from Michael's post as a HS Senior being a "Consultant" with eMagin. Presumably after the testing it should have only needed some tweeking. So , my guess, it's now a completed project and Jerry felt free to abscond. Rosy scenario brought to you by Kelloggs.
I'm sticking with that because I have had it up to here with eMagin Drama.

Tackling the next VR challenge: two ways of controlling our virtual selves

Oculus- The Early Days- John Carmack, CTO, learns as he goes, "I think this black rubbery string is called a "wire", "It's like a hose for electricity, if I squeeze it like a hose I bet the screen will go dark."

Give Up! Say Uncle!

"Yes and we are very glad you signed the liability waiver before demoing our World Changing Technology!"

Oculus Rift and the Incredible Shifting Narrative

So now it's the fault of Content Providers that the Consumer version of Oculus is delayed. How convenient. I guess they have figured out that  Dying Virtually in a Plane Crash or the Virtual Guillotine and Roller Coasters Rides that make users vomit are not titles that appeal to "normal" people. Only Oculus Early Adopters.

The Table is Set for eMagin if Their New iHMD is as Bloody Good as They Contend and is not Priced at a Level that Screams "Niche", Now What to Name It?: Oculus Rift: the brand enthusiasts and refuseniks:

Sol Rogers, founder of visual arts agency Rewind FX and a virtual reality fanatic since childhood, toldMarketing: "It’s about quality of content, content is king, the medium doesn’t matter. If you immerse your audience [in virtual reality], it had better be bloody good because otherwise they’ll say that it was a bit naff and it made them feel a bit sick."
Rogers’ comments highlight ongoing technical challenges with current iterations of the Oculus Rift, specifically that extensive use can cause nausea. Other problems include the discomfort of wearing a hot, heavy headset, screen resolution, latency issues, and the fact the headset isn’t portable.

Preaching the Small Business Gospel to Special Forces - Ms Heet here is describing Displays that eMagin developed for the USAF which in turn were appropriated by SOCOM

Additionally, a high-definition micro display developed for SOCOM has been adopted by users within the Defense Department, the medical community and even the entertainment industry. “We were collecting a lot of visual information, but we didn’t have a good display for it. Of course, that means people have to get closer, and they have to be at more risk,” Heet explains. “This high-definition micro display, which is also compatible with night vision systems, has had a wide range of uses. It has led to commercial products in the professional movie industry for broadcast cameras. The commercial applications include homeland security, law enforcement and of course, entertainment. It also has application in viewfinders, training and simulation and the medical field.”
She notes that the micro display actually started as an Air Force program before being adopted by SOCOM. “That is a wonderful thing about the SBIR program: that we can build off of each other’s topics,” she says.
