Google Inc. Is More Interested in Virtual Reality Than Facebook Thinks

Yeah, Leo. Great point. When Google Cardboard was released some observers, this one included, saw it's introduction as a parody of the Oculus Rift. Cardboard could provide a VR experience that included the whole package. 3D, immersion or Presence and of course reports that the users experienced simulator sickness just like the Dive Mask HMDs. Most importantly, as Leo points out here, it undermined the uniqueness and cost of the Oculus Rift.  Furthering that Google has a little Joint Venture on tap with Disney presumably to make a 21st Century Viewmaster. Once more pointing out the cheapness and vacuity of Facebook's Virtual Reality Project. Look everybody Facebook's "world changing " device is just a toy.  So to cement that notion Google will show a new Viewmaster at Toy Fair in New York on Saturday Feb 14. Machiavellian. Zuckerberg paid $2 Billion for a device that could be matched by $3 worth of cardboard, velcro and plastic Fresnel Lenses.  Also as Leo pointed out it drew many VR developers into Google's Android Universe.

A strategy that undermines Oculus, Facebook, Zuckerberg and their claim that their VR platform is the future. It's not the future they say, it's cardboard, it's a toy, it's not serious. Setting the stage for their own entry. Call it a radical reconfiguration of a VR Heatset, smaller, lighter, greater resolution courtesy of new optics and OLED microdisplays.
