The larger reason as revealed at "Red Flag" recently was NOT the F-35's "Shootdown" ability but it's targeting ability. F-35 finds the "bogey" fixes it and Super Hornet, Raptor, F-15 takes it out. Data Link,Night Vision, Good-Guy, Bad-Guy ID, need for high contrast and brightness, no judder et al. That is a lot of sensor fusion on the visor and it had to be crisp, no latency, matching luminance, night vision, off boresight et al. So that was the big reason for the hurry-up on he helmet. Did you see the relief on Ulmer's face? Maybe a little hype in "Red Flag's" results but most agree it accomplished it's mission of defeating the most advanced Air Defenses they could potentially encounter. That was the Acid Test.
