Geektown has skipped over OLED in their rush to figure out what Apple would use to get to that resolution. Sculley, "OLED for a very long time"... sorry Geektown

The University eMagin has been working with on microled in it's nascent stage of development wouldn't be Texas Tech, would it?

Andrew Sculley
That company is very future looking. Micro LED or inorganic LEDs. We've actually done a program with that -- with a university that I can't name. So we're very well aware of that technology. I would suggest that if you want to see how far along this is, this technology, there are "two places." One is CES and the other is SID, the Society of Information Displays. You look at CES, in 2016, there was a television Sony did and if you look at 2018, there was a television, a huge display that Samsung did. Now this was 146 inches in diagonal, and it was -- this is a quote for the guy who is there. He said, "We're saying it 8k in the horizontal direction." So that 64 pixels per inch. So I think you can see that televisions are possible now to demonstrate, but if you go to Society of Information Display and look at the microdisplay attempts there, there none of them are a display looking yet. They're very crude things coming out, so it'll take a long time for them to get to a reasonable demo and then a long time after that to get to mass production, so I think the microdisplays are tough, and I can go into detail around the technology as well, but there are 2 different technological directions to go on this. So I think there's a lot of work that has to be worked on. I think the first thing you'll see as you read the documents is you'll see a bigger display come out, so I think microdisplays will be longer term. And so that OLED is here for a very long time.

Point being CEO Sculley has mentioned a couple of times in the past retro-fitting F-16s/18s et al with this tech

With China Circling Taiwan with Heavy Bombers F-16s w F-35 Capability Would Constitute a Credible Deterrence as an Interceptor (Notice tuned-in lawmakers are leery of Chinese Tech theft?, keep looking in avionics for companies "cooperating" with PLA surrogates)

Ah, here's why eMagin and Lockheed were in the same room at India's Defexpo, Lockheed sweetens the deal for the world's largest order of F-16's with 5th Gen F-35 Helmet capabilities

whaddaya think candidate for...? Japan Display Inc. to Participate in SID DISPLAY WEEK 2018

JDI's booth will feature a series of FULL ACTIVETM displays, enabled by low temperature poly-silicon (LTPS) technology, a core JDI technology. Other new- technology prototypes – automotive displays, which allow people to imagine the interior cockpit of cars in the future, high-pixel-density displays, for VR-dedicated head-mounted displays (HMDs), and newly-developed light field displays -- will be shown, too. Other displays for automotive, industrial, medical, PC, and smartphone applications will be exhibited as well.

Mort?

The only display company at the USA Mission Solutions Summit is eMagin. Hanging out with Boeing, Lockheed/Sikorsky, Leonardo, BAE, Elbit, etc

There is an excellent documentary on Netflx "Apache Warrior" that chronicles the first engagement with the Iraqi Republican Guard in Medina in 2003. What's striking is the symbology on the pilot's HMD (Kopin in the Monocle) looks pretty much like the judder, lack of contrast, minimal info, NV Bloom, grainy green that can be seen on the HMD of the F-35 Pilot that got Kopin booted from the program. Nevertheless the Kopin Social Network Cabal forges on...

Army Heads-Up Display for soldiers

The Star of the Show..Service Members Seeing First Fruits of Army Acquisition Changes

https://www.defense.gov/News/Article/Article/1497451/service-members-seeing-first-fruits-of-army-acquisition-changes/

Plugged into the right kind of gunsight, the ENVG-B will further superimpose cross-hairs telling the soldier exactly where his or her weapon is aimed. (The technical term here is Rapid Target Acquisition). Plugged into the Nett Warrior networking device, the ENVG-B can also display pointers showing the direction to friendly troops, reported enemies, and tactical objectives. Historically, to get all this information, a soldier would have to look at one device, then another, then another — weighing him down with gadgetry and potentially taking his eyes off potential threats as he looked down at a screen or compass.
The Army actually let reporters try on a helmet kitted out with the ENVG-B and counterbalancing battery pack. That was pretty gutsy considering (a) I’d already almost knocked a $10,000 sight off the table and (b) the ENVG-B costs even more, with the Army hoping to get its price below $23,000 a soldier.

Maybe Bicycle Guttag Can Do a Side-by-Side!

Live-fire demo for Army Under Secretary at Fort Belvoir: eMagin Inside (Anybody remember "shooting around corners"?) Everybody lovin' it...

ENVG II in the Fight (eMagin Inside)

Yeah! The Plane Works as Designed!

The F-35 is engineered with an ability to dogfight and engage in air-to-air combat, yet it was also designed with an array of next-generation sensors designed to see, detect and destroy enemy targets from much farther ranges than existing fighter jets can. The concept is to find, see and eliminate enemy air threats well before the F-35 itself can be detected.

Information Display Newsletter (SID). Page 16 is interesting.

Mr. Young went to Kopin to hear the Real Dr. Fan prevaricate about the F-35 and repeat the 5 rules. Good grief. He went too Hopewell Jct and provides an oblique reference to Direct Patterned Displays. What a scoop! (sarc)

I also went to Hopewell, NY, to visit an even smaller public company, eMagin. According to eMagin CEO Andrew Scully, AR needs a mechanically flexible battery, voice input, artificial intelligence, a smartphone connection, and a high-speed graphics processor. eMagin thinks that OLED is preferable to LCOS because it can reach >2000 ppi, supports contrast levels, has faster response times, is transparent, and can reach acceptable luminance levels. eMagin can achieve luminous levels of over 2,000 nits because it is the first company that has been able to pattern OLEDs at the micron level and therefore does not need a color filter, which blocks >50 percent of the light.

Interesting Twitter Thread on ML1 and Guttag. Agree that Doc Kreylos or Kent Bye would be down the middle reviewers without Guttag's baggage, If he wanted to get a shot at a hands-on review he should have throttled back his carping but then he wouldn't be Guttag. Never see it pre-release despite Ciger's pleading...

Global Military Avionics market grows to US$ 38 billion in 2025 according to MarketForecast.com (Hate these but this one you do not see that often)

This market has witnessed rapid technology advancements in the past few years, a good example is the HMD in the F-35 which is considered state of the art technology.

Chutzpah

Kopin at SPIE Defense. Looks like they are showcasing the NVIS Armor Drive Simulator (New approach for Kopin as they try to fight a two front Twitter war, they are also trolling Magic Leap saying they should have adhered to Fan's 5 Rules (desperate and sad!).

The Other "Company of Interest" eMagin is in the room with at Defexpo is Textron. Sculley has mentioned that there are only a few Rotary Wing Companies out there and with Boeing (AH 63-64 in the fold) the others would be , fair to say, easier to approach.Textron is Bell Helicopter. Lockheed in Attendance is Sikorsky.

Of course Textron could find a use of a "Skylens" type device in their commercial aviation fleet as well.

Thanks Frank. Movie Buff Hot Reaction. Tom Hanks Sure Could Have Used One of These in "Castaway" It's Skylens with more Limited Use. But the Limited Use in This Situation is Critical.
